Job Summary

AECOM’s Sustainability team comprises of specialists within our Building and Places Business Line. We are recognised as industry leaders in the field of sustainable development. Our projects range from working with Governments to support Building Regulations and National planning policy relating to climate change, to developing energy and sustainability strategies to support our towns and cities in achieving their net zero ambitions, and the design and planning of new developments across the UK.

We work across all construction stages, from pre-feasibility, through feasibility, business case development, design, construction and operation; and across a wide range of sectors - housing, healthcare, schools, universities, offices, retail, hospitality etc. We also deliver advice relating to existing portfolios. Our work includes:

  • The development of policy on low carbon and renewable energy, climate change and sustainability issues at national, regional and local levels

  • Preparing industry-leading best practice guidance and policy advice for Government, GLA, RIBA and CIBSE

  • Sustainable masterplanning of new communities

  • Energy strategies including the planning and design of decentralised energy infrastructure (including heat networks) and energy statements

  • Sustainability statements and appraisals

  • Design advice and feasibility studies for new build and refurbishment projects

  • Environmental assessments - BREEAM, LEED, WELL, Home Quality Mark and the RICS Ska Rating

  • Circular economy strategies and embodied carbon calculations

  • The development of Corporate Social Responsibility policies and carbon footprint reporting

  • Research into reducing energy use, improving resilience to climate change and creating more sustainable buildings and places.

  • Strategic energy masterplanning for large estates, towns and cities whose ambitions range from Net Zero to energy efficiency.

Job Responsibilities

We are looking at a number of positions within the team across all of our service lines. Based on your skill set, your responsibilities could include:

  • Developing sustainability and energy strategies to support existing estates, towns, cities, countries – to help them reduce carbon emissions and energy consumption and mapping a viable route to net zero

  • Developing sustainability strategies to support building design teams and sustainability statements to support planning applications.

  • Developing energy strategies to support building design teams and energy statements to support planning applications

  • Managing and conducting environmental assessments of buildings including BREEAM, LEED and WELL and Home Quality Mark assessments. This can cover both design stage and post construction assessment of buildings.

  • Contributing to a wide range of projects as the workload dictates

  • Writing proposals and winning new work

  • Building client relationships and delivering work

  • Project management of projects and the management of resource to achieve deliverables.

  • Presentations to clients and chairing meeting

  • Delivering high quality, clearly written outputs

  • Delegating work to junior staff and managing delivery

  • Thought leadership and contributing to the continued growth of the AECOM sustainability team

Minimum Requirements

  • An ability to communicate effectively, be client-facing and able to write concise and clear reports;

  • Have a good understanding of and interest in sustainable development issues as they relate to the built environment

  • Have experience of working with clients and managing

Preferred Qualifications

  • A science, engineering or building-related degree; a building sustainability/energy related MSc is desirable.
