Our Ground Engineering team in London - Wimbledon is currently recruiting for a Senior Engineering Geologist with experience of providing ground engineering design input to a variety of engineering projects. The successful candidate will form part of our established and highly experienced ground engineering team providing local office project support but additionally support to projects in others offices with an associated diverse work load including the Transportation (Road and Rail), Water, Tunnel, Building and Places and Environment sectors.
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the industry with demonstrable experience in the technical support of projects and be conversant with the standards that apply. We are looking for an ambitious team player with strong development skills who wishes to assist in the development of innovative, cost effective and buildable solutions in an environment that is collaborative, stimulating and demanding. The role would suit a self-motivated individual looking to advance their career in a dynamic team.
Our Ground Engineering team in the UK comprises around 190 staff and provides one-stop access to a variety of services. The London - Wimbledon office has an established track record of successfully delivering ground engineering schemes throughout the UK and overseas. We are now looking to enhance and grow this team with individuals with a sound technical background in geotechnical design that share our enthusiasm and determination to support our expanding workload.
The team provides services ranging from project management, feasibility studies, ground investigation procurement and supervision, detailed design and construction supervision for geotechnical works on a wide range of contracts and also supports other AECOM business lines where projects have a Ground Engineering interface.
The Ground Engineering team is currently involved in a number of high profile projects with a variety of clients. Our clients are from the private and public sector and our leading UK clients include Highways England, Network Rail, HS2, Homes and Communities Agency, BP. Shell, Thames Water, Environment Agency and numerous Local Authorities, as well as leading contractors and developers for overseas clients.
We have an impressive portfolio of major national and international infrastructure projects including:
Detailed earthworks design and ground modelling for Hinkley Point C Nuclear Power Station, Earthworks and Preliminary Works Contract.
Multi-million pound regeneration of Brent Cross, including highway, local waterway and bridge design.
A303 Stonehenge – preliminary design.
HS2 Ph 2B design engineering support
Design of the central section of the Thames Tideway Tunnel.
Earthworks and Slope Remediation Schemes for Network Rail on the East Coast Main Line, Midland and West Coast Mainline.
Slope remediation schemes for Highways England in Area 4 and Area 8.
Sports stadiums – Al Wakrah (Qatar) and Cameroon.
Foundation design and liquefaction assessments for Tangiers Med 2, a new container port in Morocco
As a Senior Engineering Geologist your responsibilities will include:
Preparing reports on desktop studies and site visits, Ground Investigation Reports and Geotechnical Design Reports as required by Eurocode 7
Planning and preparing of ground investigations including technical specifications and contract documents for ground investigations (GI), supervising investigations and acting as the Investigation Supervisor.
Scheduling laboratory tests, checking GI Contractor’s reports, interpreting and analysing the results using software such as Excel, Surfer and gINT.
Collating, manipulating and interpreting data to provide reliable design parameters
Designing geotechnical elements such as earth and rock slopes, deep and shallow foundations, gravity and embedded retaining walls and ground improvement using appropriate software.
You will assist in preparation of bids and proposals and attend meetings with contractors and clients, both external and internal and work on multi-disciplinary project design teams.
Reporting to the design team leader you will interface directly with other ground engineering team members, from graduates to Directors and with other internal design teams and various disciplines.
You will have strong development skills and the technical ability, knowledge and competence to provide guidance and teaching to others when required.
Ability to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary design team, to ensure work packages are delivered on time and within budget.
Establishing strong working relationships and ensuring regular liaison with other internal teams.
Be aware of and understand the AECOM Project Management procedures, their importance and their application to projects, including monthly progress and budget reviews of projects.
Carry out regular design reviews in accordance with the company Quality Management System.
As a Senior Engineering Geologist you will have relevant experience enabling you to have developed a range of engineering geological knowledge and skills.
You will have a working knowledge of UK geology, engineering geology and ground investigation practice. Experience of London/South East UK geology would be an advantage.
You will be able to describe soils and rocks, appreciate geomorphological features, record your findings and write clear and concise reports.
You will have used software such as SlopeW, gINT/Holebase and the Rocscience suite and be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel. Knowledge of CAD and geotechnical software such as the Oasys suite, REPUTE, PLAXIS and WALLAP would be an advantage.
You will be familiar with the UK Specification for Ground Investigation, the ICC Conditions of Contract and standards including BS5930 and BS1377 and be able to prepare specifications and contract documents.
You should be willing to travel within the UK and overseas for limited periods
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the industry with a demonstrable experience in UK soils and the technical support of projects and be conversant with the standards that apply.
You will have a valid UK driving licence;
A BSc, MSci or MSc in earth sciences focusing on geology and engineering geology is essential.
Qualifications that include geotechnical engineering, hydrogeology or other related subjects would be an advantage.
A PhD in an appropriate subject would be an advantage.
Chartered with the Geological Society of London, EurGeol or equivalent status.
