AECOM Telecommunication Designer in Thornhill, Ontario

Job Summary

  • Performs specific and limited portions of a broader assignment of an experienced engineer.

  • Gathers and correlates basic engineering data using established and well-defined procedures.

  • Works on detailed or routine engineering assignments involving calculations and relatively simple tests.

  • Proposes approach to solve new problems encountered.

  • Identifies discrepancies in results.

  • Provides guidance to entry level engineers.

  • Performs work in accordance with agreed upon budget and schedule with little supervision.

Minimum Requirements

AECOM’s Markham office is currently seeking a Telecommunication Designer to join our growing Buildings and Places team. The Buildings and Places Team is a vibrant and growing business line which delivers engineering, architectural, and project management services as well as planning and economic analysis for vertical construction projects.

Project assignments may include, although not limited to, commercial, institutional, healthcare, pharmaceutical, water/waste water, campuses, and transit facilities. The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to: Telecommunication, Security, and Audio-Visual (AV) systems design.

Prepare detailed design for the telecommunication, security, CCTV, PA, AV, DAS, intercom, and intrusion detection systems to accurately incorporate project guidelines.

Provide space planning, pathways, wiring/cabling system layouts, room layouts, rack elevations, and grounding design for the voice, data, security, wireless, and other telecom systems.

Prepare construction specifications for the Divisions 27 and 28, contract documents, and engineering progress reports.

Demonstrated understanding of the ANSI/TIA standards, IEEE standards, BICSI best practices/handbooks relative to telecommunication, security and AV system specification design and telecom engineering software tools.

Ensuring design conforms to all applicable electrical-building codes, and client standards/specifications.

Travel to the construction sites to conduct installation reviews and prepare site visit reports.

Technical supervision of junior engineers and technologists including mark-ups and review of design and drafting.

Telecommunication system commissioning. Building condition audits and reports.

Able to work to tight schedules, control project budgets and motivate staff to do the same.

Demonstrated written and verbal English communication skills.

Sound judgment supported by excellent technical, analytical and problem-solving skills.

Well-organized, self-directed work habits with a demonstrated ability to prioritize and schedule tasks managing multiple projects simultaneously in a dynamic environment.

Experience in AutoCAD, and Microsoft Office suite.

Preferred Qualifications

Must Have Skills/Experience/Education (Including any required Certifications):

Minimum Electronics and Communications Technology diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution.

2+ years of experience in the engineering consulting industry, preferably in a building engineering group.

Previous experience with an architectural/engineering consulting firm in designing of telecommunication, security, and AV systems.

Able to work to tight schedules, control project budgets and motivate staff to do the same.

Analytical, technical and problem-solving skills and abilities. Analytical, resourceful and goal detailed oriented.

Ability to communicate, coordinate, and work well with others both internally and externally teams.

Strong verbal, written communication skills and commitment to technical excellence/quality.

Self-motivated and proactive. A good team player and decision maker

Valid driver's license.

Preferred Skills/Experience:

Registered Communication Distribution Designer (RCDD) with BICSI is an asset.

Experience in REVIT

Provide valuable leadership to junior staff while move them toward developing their skills.

Ideal candidate would have significant local experience in above mentioned markets with strong ties and background in the local market and engineering consulting community.

Experience in supervising staff on a project by project basis.

P3 project experience will be given preference.
