Job Description

AECOM is actively seeking to hire a Traction Power Engineer that is highly talented and hardworking as an addition to our growing team in the transit systems practice. This unique and exciting position offers the opportunity to work in an established practice that offers great growth opportunities, while receiving support from global system practices which leads the nation in transit systems design. This position will work within our New England Transit Group and can work out of one of our regional offices.

The primary role of this position is to prepare design drawings and documents, technical specifications, cost estimates, proposals, calculations, and studies associated with traction power system for electrified railways AC and DC. Will perform project work as well as serve as a technical leader.

Typical duties and responsibilities;

  • Will guide drafters/designers and less experienced engineers to prepare but not limited to single-line diagrams, elementary and wiring diagrams, SCADA, communications, conduit and cable sizing/routing, substation physical layouts, emergency trip, grounding and lighting, selection of substation equipment, writing of substation equipment specifications, proposal development, construction cost estimates, and project scheduling, test plans, field tests, reports, analysis, and technical studies for traction power systems.

  • Will perform protective relay settings and coordination studies.

  • Will perform grounding design, load flow, harmonic, power flow, voltage drop, protective relay settings and coordination and arc flash studies using specialized software.

  • Will recommend appropriate actions to ensure compliance with all client, local, state, and federal regulations including AREMA railway standards, the National Electric Code (NFPA 70), the National Electric Safety Code (IEEE C2), and other applicable US standards.

  • Will develop systemwide duct bank drawings by working in close coordination with respective system disciplines. Assist and provide working information to CAD for BIM clash detection.

  • Provide value engineering on traction power systems.

  • Perform technical reviews of other team members’ designs.

  • Interface with other technical disciplines such as communications systems, overhead catenary/3rd rail, electrical, mechanical, structural, architectural, track and civil.

  • Work with Senior Traction Power Engineers

  • Design with constructability in mind throughout all steps of the design process.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements;

  • BA/BS in Electrical Engineering or related field plus two (2) years of related experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications;

  • Professional Engineer (PE) Registration.

  • 6 years of traction power design experience, including DC third rail and overhead AC.

  • Extensive experience in the execution and task leadership for design calculations, plans development, specifications and technical report writing.

  • Experience in writing proposals and delivery of oral presentations to clients.

  • Familiar with AutoCAD and OpenRoads/OpenRail.

  • Experience with CTDOT, Metro-North, Amtrak, MBTA.

Offered compensation will be based on location and individual qualifications. The expected range is $70,222.96 - $129,912.47.
