We are currently recruiting for a Senior Bridge Engineer to join our busy and expanding Bridges team in our Bristol offices (other locations offered, Cardiff & Plymouth). We have an established track record of successfully delivering major transport schemes from these offices. We offer a vibrant and diverse mix of sectors and disciplines including Buildings & Places, Environment, Programme Cost Consulting and a large Transportation team including both Rail and Bridges disciplines. The teams provide design, assessment, inspection, repair/remediation, construction support and management services on a wide range of transport infrastructure projects.
Our current portfolio of works comprises a diverse mix of local, national and international bridges and structures projects in both rail and road including numerous long-term frameworks.
A selection of our current and recent projects includes:
Network Rail Wales & West CP6 IP – AECOM support Principal Contractors Morgan Sindall and AMCO-Giffen for ‘Design & Build’ contracts in both the Western and Wales routes undertaking new-build detailed design and bridge refurbishment schemes through F001 to F003 delivery.
Civils Assessment Framework Agreement (CAFA) – AECOM is appointed across nine rail routes for the framework contract. Our Bristol team supports Wales and Western routes in undertaking Level 1 & Level 2 assessments of overbridges, footbridges and underbridges to a multitude of structural materials including steel, wrought-iron, cast-iron, pre-stressed concrete, masonry arches with structures ageing from 200 years old to modern construction forms. Our works involve: undertaking Inspection for Assessment to determine condition, loading and obtain dimensionality of structures; structural analysis including grillages (Level 1) and Finite Element Analysis (Level 2) and reporting including sensitivity analysis and recommendations for further works.
WECA – AECOM provides TAA support, design and asset management services to the four local authorities that make up WECA (West of England Combined Authority) including Bristol CC, South Gloucestershire CC, Bath & North-East Somerset CC and North Somerset CC. We help support the local authorities through technical advice including departures from standard and AiP approvals, and providing consulting services including assessments, remediation, strengthening and detailed design of new structures in accordance with DMRB and Eurocode standards.
SWTRA (South Wales Trunk Road Agent) – AECOM are engaged to provide engineering support services within the ‘Central’ section. Recent schemes have included reinforced concrete repairs including cathodic protection, PTSI examination, pier impact assessment to IAN91, rehabilitation of half-joints, replacement of expansion joints and bearings and improved vehicular containment to bridges.
CORMAC – AECOM is appointed as ‘strategic delivery partner’ and responsible for providing numerous transportation services including bridges to Cornwall County Council on behalf of CORMAC; schemes include bridge replacement, bridge refurbishments and structures remediation.
As a Senior Bridge Engineer you will have the following daily responsibilities:
Take a leading role in the design of major civil engineering structures
Prepare designs under minimal supervision
Assist with the commercial and financial control of your project
Analysis and detailed design of road/rail bridges and other structures
Inspection, assessment and strengthening of road/rail bridges and other structures
Supervision and line management of graduate engineers and technicians
Prepare, implement and assess contract documents
Report checking and production of technical reports and documents.
Project management of schemes including client reporting, programming, resource planning and commercial management
Looking for a good blend of the following:
Experience with bridge and related structural inspection assessment and design schemes
Proven design and project management experience delivering to quality, time and budget
Experience in road and/or rail projects in the U.K
Previous exposure with clients of both national and local authorities, together with major contractors
Ability to manage staff and project Health and Safety responsibilities including compliance with CDM legislation
You will have a current clean driving license and be willing to travel throughout the UK to visit sites
Strong ability in various software packages ideally including LUSAS and MIDAS with strong experience in Finite Element Analysis preferred
Good knowledge and experience of the following: Eurocode, British, Highways England and Network Rail Standards
Good experience in delivering bridge design through Highways England and/or Network Rail standards
Degree educated or equivalent in a relevant subject such as Bridge, Civil or Structural Engineering.
Ideally educated to MSc level or equivalent.
Either a Chartered Engineer with ICE or IStructE, or close to completion.
