AECOM Principal Structural Engineer in Plymouth, United Kingdom

Job Summary

We are currently recruiting for a Principal Structural Engineer to join our Plymouth Structures team. This opportunity has arisen in our Building & Places Business Unit which focusses on projects within the Built Environment.

We are looking for you to manage projects, lead a small team, solve challenging engineering problems and help develop the business by being client facing and aware of the commercial side consulting.

About us

Our Plymouth office has an established track record of successfully delivering projects of varying scale and complexity for both private and public clients. Our modern office environment has excellent transport links, including car parking and comprises a vibrant diverse mix of sectors and disciplines including Buildings & Places, Environment, Landscape, Infrastructure and Cost Consulting. We are now looking to enhance and grow the structures team with individuals with a sound technical background and who share our enthusiasm and determination to support our expanding workload.

Our workload ranges from feasibility studies to scheme designs, detailed designs, assessments, inspections and construction support on a wide range of building developments and heavy civil structural projects principally in the defence, health and commercial sectors.

A list of some of the current projects which the Plymouth office is working on includes:

Northgate, Bridgwater ­­

- New cinema, restaurant and leisure complex in Bridgewater, Somerset. Development includes the design of the new buildings as well as associated car parking and infrastructure.

Newton Abbot Redevelopment - The redevelopment of the pedestrianised shopping precinct in the town centre which includes the refurbishment of the shop fronts and the construction of a glazed trussed canopy to cover the boulevard.

Bereavement Centre - New bereavement centre for Plymouth, comprising two ceremony spaces and supporting office accommodation. The development also includes a separate function suite/café and a further office building, all set within new landscaped grounds.

Defence projects - numerous projects of varying scale, including both building structures and heavy civil structural engineering projects. Work ranges from inspections, structural assessments to detailed design, often working within internal multi-disciplinary teams.

As a Principal Structural Engineer, you will have the following daily responsibilities:

  • Take responsibility for leading structural engineering projects.

  • Engage with clients to define requirements, present proposals, discuss project progress and undertake presentation of project results.

  • Contribute to business development.

  • Effectively control commercial, managerial and technical aspects of projects or parts thereof for which you are responsible.

  • Undertake, or lead a team of engineers and technicians in undertaking, technically challenging projects without supervision within prescribed programme constraints.

  • Co-ordinate project delivery with internal and external clients.

  • Undertake structural engineering projects, by performing analyses and calculations as appropriate, along with preparing design reports for client submission without supervision.

  • Supervise work undertaken by others, ensuring that it is carried out to the appropriate technical standard and that it is managed to programme and budget.

  • Have a desire to learn new skills and the ability to consider the wider engineering issues related to the analyses being undertaken.

Minimum Requirements

  • A track record in the delivery of projects for clients, or the ability to demonstrate significant contribution towards project delivery

  • Degree educated or equivalent in a relevant subject such as Civil or Structural Engineering.

  • Must be Chartered with the IStructE or ICE

  • Ability to obtain MOD security clearance

  • Knowledge of the Eurocode Standards

Preferred Qualifications

  • You will have a current driving license and will be willing to travel to visit sites

  • Ability to deliver design solutions, lead teams and successfully manage projects

  • A highly motivated individual with excellent communication skills

  • Knowledge of construction contracts and high commercial awareness

  • A strong background in software analysis and a high level of technical skills. Knowledge of SCIA Engineer and Tekla Structural Designer software packages would be beneficial

  • Experience of working on heavy civil structural engineering projects, and/or experience working on seismically qualified structures would be advantageous.
