Job Description

AECOM Technical Services Inc. – Buildings + Places (B+P) Northern California business line is looking for a Senior Structural Engineer / Department Lead to lead our team in the Oakland CA office . As the Department lead your responsibilities will include leading a team of engineers developing unique and challenging designs for projects of various sizes and complexity. Candidate must be well organized, be able to demonstrate critical thinking, and be able to work independently or as part of a collaborative team. They must be able to make technical recommendations to our clients based on industry standard engineering techniques, procedures, and the applicable codes. They also will be a team leader / mentor for our growing team.

As Senior Structural Department Lead Engineer, your role will include:

  • Effective department leadership in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary, multi-office environment with the ability to leverage local, national, and global expertise for innovative solutions to complex design challenges.

  • Utilization of your senior leadership skills to supervise/mentor intermediate engineers and junior designers.

  • Working closely with multiple B+P offices within the West Region with our Southern California team being the closest offices that we collaborate with the most frequently.

  • Utilization of your experience with Business Development efforts including Client Interaction, assistance with proposals and development of design fees.

  • Preparation of complete Structural designs for multiple types of projects varying in size and delivery method.

  • Planning of design work, calculating costs, and managing time schedules to assign design duties to junior staff working on projects.

  • The proactive coordination of design and schedule with our other disciplines such as architectural, mechanical, electrical, technology, clerical, and equipment suppliers.

  • Maintenance of accurate, clear, and concise project documentation and design data for permanent project files.

  • The requirement to be self-motivated with the ability to work independently and exemplify strong and effective leadership skills.

  • Attendance in project meetings, or when appropriate, delegation of such activities.

  • Assisting in project checking for quality control on other projects.

  • Having knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principals involved in production of technical plans and drawings.

  • Representing the organization and acting as a liaison with individuals and related organizations.

  • The use of significant experience with California seismic design for new and existing structures.

Preferred areas of experience:

  • Federal

  • Hospital/Healthcare

  • Commercial / Light Industrial

  • Analysis and Retrofit Design of existing structures

  • Anchorage of Non-Structural elements (new and existing structures)

  • Experience with multiple structural design materials (Steel, Concrete, Masonry, Timber)

  • Experience with analysis using ASCE 41 for seismic analysis and retrofit of existing structures

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in Civil Engineering with a Structural emphasis with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.

  • CA Professional Engineer (P.E) license

Preferred Qualifications

  • CA Professional Structural Engineer (S.E) license

  • A minimum of fifteen (15) years of experience designing buildings and retrofits of existing structures in a high seismic region.

  • Experience with analysis using ASCE 41 for seismic analysis and retrofit of existing structures

  • Experience working with multi-discipline project teams.

  • Extensive knowledge of California and International Building Codes.

  • Fluent in English with excellent written and technical communication skills.

  • Able to use advanced techniques in the modification or extension of theories and practices of sciences and disciplines to complete assignments.

  • Experience scoping and drafting fees for engineering components of interdisciplinary project work.

  • Experienced in Structural Design and Calculation Software (ETABS, SAP, SAFE, and RAM/Bentley Software).

Additional Information

  • Offered rate of compensation will be based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. The salary range for this position is $160,000 - $210,000.
