Job Summary

AECOM’s Transportation team currently has a vacancy for a Bridge Inspector, with their well-established and collaborative team working on the A19 Dishforth to Tyne Tunnel DBFO Contract. You will be based at the DBFO Company’s offices in Billingham, Teesside. Although predominantly engaged on inspections, there will be scope for involvement in design work and site supervision. We will offer you support in progressing towards professional qualifications.

You will be part of a team that provides technical support to the DBFO Company for the inspection and maintenance of approximately 220 highway structures, including multi-span viaducts, bridges, culverts, sign gantries, masts and retaining structures.

There will an appropriate allowance for travel will be included in the remuneration package. Some of the work will include several weeks per year working night shifts.

Job Duties

  • Plan and carry out principal, general and special inspections of highway bridges and other structures (including subways, culverts, masts, gantries, retaining walls, etc.)

  • Prepare detailed inspection and condition reports within Highways England’s Integrated Asset Management Information System (IAMIS).

  • Recommend assessment, maintenance and repair activities for existing structures.

  • Carry out risk assessments and produce method statements/safe work plans.

  • Assist the Bridge Manager with day-to-day activities, such as the management of abnormal load movements and incident response.

Minimum Requirements

  • ONC or equivalent in civil engineering or related discipline.

  • Understanding of highway structures – their construction, repair and mechanisms of failure

  • Experience delivering to quality, time and budget.

  • A proactive approach to health and safety.

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to liaise effectively with clients, site operatives and suppliers

  • Relevant experience in the inspection and monitoring of highway bridges and related structures.

  • Familiarity with the Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works and the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges.

  • A current full driving licence.

Preferred Qualifications

​​​​​​Whilst not essential any of the following skills would be desirable:

  • Familiarity with Highways England’s Integrated Asset Management Information System (IAMIS) (full training will be provided if not)

  • AutoCAD experience

  • NEBOSH certification (this will be supported if not)

  • CSCS Card holder (this will be facilitated if not)

  • Training and experience in confined space access and operation of mobile elevated work platforms (MEWPs) (full training will be provided if not)

  • Experience of testing typical bridge elements and materials

  • Qualification to the Bridge Inspector Certification Scheme (NHSS31) (this will be supported if not)

  • Highways Passport holder (this will be facilitated if not)
