AECOM's Energy Business Unit houses three specialised practices — nuclear, renewables, and transmission & distribution. Each practice plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of energy, offering innovative solutions that balance efficiency, reliability, and sustainability.

We are looking for energy professionals with varying areas of expertise/experience to join our rapidly expanding renewable energy team. You will be based in our HUB offices within easy reach of either Edinburgh, Glasgow, or Bristol, working to a flexible hybrid approach.

Transmission and Distribution

We have a tremendously challenging programme in front of us in the run-up to achieving 2030 net-zero targets. New overhead lines, underground cables, substations, battery storage and subsea links are all needed – and quickly. AECOM Transmission and Distribution is currently supporting the network development which will underpin grid modernisation. Job Description

Being part of the team:

AECOM is seeking a Senior Engineer or Engineer (dependent on experience) to join our Grid & Energy Advisory team in the UK and Ireland Transmission and Distribution practice. You can be based in any of our locations in the UK and Ireland which includes Birmingham, Bristol, Dublin, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester, Newcastle, and St Albans.

We will consider hybrid working arrangements.

What your new role will entail:

The primary objective of this role is to assist the team in the development and delivery of power systems studies activities.

You’ll be expected to provide technical expertise in bids and proposals and to represent the company in client meetings as appropriate.

Typical power systems studies activities you'll work on (related to T&D projects) include:

Planning studies for Transmission and Distribution System Operators

Design studies for:

  • HV projects (e.g. substations and energy storage systems)

  • Grid connections for renewable and conventional generation

  • Grid connections for key facilities such as water, ports, airports, data centres, hospitals, and large commercial, industrial and public sector facilities

  • HVDC and FACTS

  • Grid modernisation projects

  • Grid compliance studies for connection of new projects

Qualifications

Here’s what we will need from you:

  • Professionally qualified in Electrical Engineering (CEng or working towards)

  • Proven power systems experience with capabilities in several of the following areas such as:

  • Steady-state studies such as load flow,

  • Fault level and reactive compensation,

  • Dynamic studies such as frequency and voltage stability,

  • Harmonic analysis, power quality, filter design,

  • Transient overvoltage and insulation coordination simulation studies (switching, lightning),

  • Control interaction studies,

  • Earthing and lightning protection studies,

  • Protection coordination and arc flash studies

  • Grid connection support to onshore and offshore developers.

  • Coordinate across project disciplines, external subcontractors and remote offices such that technical risks are identified and mitigated, and all statutory and regulatory requirements are met

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; experienced in creating and presenting technical reports; and responding to clients’ technical questions

  • Ability to understand and communicate customer requirements, lead technical discussions with customers and develop client relationships

  • Understanding of Systems Engineering principles and requirements management

  • Understanding of functional characteristics of power systems

  • Able to work to deadlines under pressure whilst maintaining the safety, quality and engineering integrity of the solution

  • Prepared to take part in working groups such as CIGRE, IET and other professional bodies
