AECOM is recruiting for a Principal Engineer to join our UK Transmission and Distribution (T&D) department. Our T&D team delivers EHV/HV design for electrical power projects at transmission and distribution voltage levels. The primary focus of this role is pre-construction design for large-scale infrastructure, grid connections, and private networks at voltage levels normally between 33kV and 400kV. Typical projects include feasibility, optioneering studies, FEED, detailed design and design assurance on existing or new substations and other infrastructure. As a Principal Engineer the successful candidate will be required to lead the design development and coordinate the design inputs required from other disciplines. A key requirement of the role is having experience as Contractor Design Assurance Engineer (CDAE) for National Grid projects, with experience as a LCDAE preferred.

The work typically comes from:

  • Large projects and frameworks with transmission network operators mostly in UK and Ireland but also in Africa, Australia, New Zealand and the Middle East.

  • Client and owners engineer roles on construction of HV infrastructure.

  • Connections for renewable generation and hyperscale data centres.

  • Internal AECOM clients delivering large industrial and electrification projects.

  • Renewable energy projects, including pumped storage hydro, offshore and onshore wind and solar PV.

  • In addition, to the engineering responsibilities, this role includes some support to bidding, project and quality management.

Minimum Requirements

Required/Essential Skills & Experience

  • Previous experience with consultancy, contractor or utility in the energy sector.

  • Extensive experience (app. 6-10 years) as FEED designer, detailed design or owner’s engineer role.

  • Experience designing EHV/HV infrastructure across the full project lifecycle from feasibility to detailed design. Experience at 400kV is preferred.

  • Experience as LCDAE or as a minimum experience as CDAE for Contractor design.

  • Good team player with a client-focused mindset and customer facing skills

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Project management (incl. budget, time and quality).

  • Experience of managing multi-discipline engineering projects

  • Experience of design review & site construction review.

  • The role is focused on primary plant, but knowledge of secondary system design will be advantageous.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering.
