We’re looking for someone who is committed to tackling human factors and equality challenges, ideally with knowledge of rail and/or highways, as well as equality policy, guidance, and good practice more generally.

As a Graduate Consultant in our Impact Assessment Practice Area (IAPA), you will be involved in research and analysis, combining desk studies with site visits. You’ll employ your creativity to develop ideas and solutions to deliver effective human factors outcomes and further equality in design.


We pride ourselves on being at the forefront of efforts to address the key issues facing society, including decarbonising infrastructure and achieving net zero, reversing the decline in biodiversity, tackling the housing crisis, and promoting community wellbeing.

Our human factors and accessibility work include:

  • Human factors and ergonomics support for rail enhancement projects, including new stations, station upgrades, and signalling control room studies

  • Supporting research studies for National Highways, including good practice reviews, driving simulator studies, site audits, and pilot trials

  • Maintenance studies for buildings and large-scale infrastructure projects

  • Disabled accessibility guidance for building refurbishment and new building projects

  • Accessibility audits of existing buildings and other built environments

  • Supporting equalities impact assessments, and broader social impact and social-value related work

IAPA is part of the Environment & Sustainability (E&S) business, which has a workforce of some 730 staff across the UK and Republic of Ireland. E&S provides environment and sustainability solutions for public and private sector clients and is at the forefront of efforts to tackle the climate and biodiversity emergencies. When you start with AECOM, we will pair you with a senior member of the team who will guide and mentor you through your initial period of working on live projects and business development proposals.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting project directors and managers and wider project teams in the delivery of human factors and ergonomics guidance

  • Assembling and analysing data and carrying out desk-based studies and site visits

  • Assisting in the delivery of a wide range of project outputs including – for example, literature reviews, driver simulator assessments, task analyses, workload studies, accessibility audits, and equalities/diversity impact assessments

  • Participating in project team meetings, client meetings and internal meetings, including training sessions

  • Prioritising tasks and meeting commitments on an on-going basis and taking ownership and responsibility for the completion and quality of work

  • Assisting project directors and managers and wider project teams with the coordination of inputs from colleagues internally as well as external sub-consultants

  • Providing ideas and potential solutions for more effective human factors, equalities, and accessibility outcomes

  • Following sound project management principles and appreciating the need to work within project budgets

  • Keeping up to date with relevant human factors and accessibility legislation, policy, guidance, and best practice

  • Ensuring that health and safety issues are embedded in project delivery from the outset

  • Providing input to business development proposals (expression of interest and tender responses) and continuously improving our service offering to clients

Minimum Requirements

You’ll be delivering a wide range of projects within multi-disciplinary teams. You’ll need to be self-motivated, enthusiastic, and ambitious, as well as having…

  • A relevant first degree and, potentially, a relevant post-graduate degree in ergonomics or human factors.

  • Membership of the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (CIEHF), ideally to Graduate level as a minimum.

  • Excellent research and report writing skills

  • Excellent numerical and analytical skills with the aptitude to understand and communicate complex technical information

  • Experience in assessing physical design issues to deliver ergonomics solutions and improve access for disabled people

  • Ability to produce diagrams or simple drawings to illustrate solutions

  • Ability to work as part of a team and the capacity to collaborate and communicate effectively with colleagues, clients, and stakeholders

  • Ability to work to deadlines, working flexibly under pressure and responding to changing project and programme demands

  • Understanding of how to help manage projects effectively

  • Strong Microsoft Office skills including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

  • Proven organisational skills, attention to detail and the ability to structure and prioritise the delivery of project outputs effectively while working as part of a multi-disciplinary team

Preferred Qualifications

  • A full and clean driving licence for site work visits/equipment set up, at times in remote locations

  • You will also be required to undergo UK security clearance as part of approval to work on some projects.
