AECOM Principal Climate Consultant in Leeds, United Kingdom

Job Summary

We are currently recruiting for established and enthusiastic Principal Climate Change or Carbon consultants to join our UK-wide Business Sustainability team. We have a well-deserved reputation for working with clients to produce robust climate assessments and carbon footprints that can be used with confidence in decision making. The team is currently working on a wide range of climate related projects for UK and multi-national businesses. Examples include GHG assessments as part of EIAs/ESIAs in sectors including highways, rail, aviation, power and urban regeneration; developing and reviewing carbon calculation tools; and advising on ambitions and targets for low carbon strategies including applying the science-based approach and developing associated mitigation plans.

The successful candidates will be expected to manage project teams to deliver carbon and climate assessments for infrastructure projects as well as multi-national businesses. Our flexible working arrangements mean that the successful candidates can be based in any one of our 40 UK offices.

A typical week could involve:

  • Conducting and delivering technical work across a range of climate and carbon projects;

  • Leading project/task teams to deliver carbon and climate related projects;

  • Managing tasks and projects covering technical, quality and financial management;

  • Supporting and mentoring team members building their capacity and expertise;

  • Liaising and collaborating with colleagues, clients and their advisors to deliver work on time, budget and achieving technical excellence;

  • Leading the preparation of technical reports;

  • Multitasking: working across several projects and proposals, including those around climate assessment for EIA, sustainable infrastructure, climate change/sustainability strategy, carbon footprints for products and enterprises, and Life Cycle Analysis (LCA);

  • Preparing costed proposals and other business development materials (e.g. for webinars, flyers, case studies, etc.);

  • Building long term client relationships; and

  • Supporting the team leadership to identify and secure new opportunities

Minimum Requirements

We are looking for enthusiastic candidates with the following:

  • Strong experience in carbon accounting (covering Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions) and demonstratable understanding of GHG reporting standards, guidance and regulatory regimes for example PAS 2080; PAS2050; EU ETS; ESOS etc.

  • Familiarity with climate projections including using them to build the case with colleagues, clients and their advisors to influence climate change resilient designs;

  • Demonstrated experience in advising on and integrating low carbon and resilient solutions into infrastructure design;

  • A strong understanding and practical application of the requirements for climate assessment in EIA and ESIA;

  • A holistic understanding of sustainability, with a particular interest in carbon management;

  • A strong attention to detail with an emphasis on delivering technically excellent outputs

  • Project and financial management experience

  • Commercial awareness for and track record in business development, marketing, and proposal preparation

  • Great communication skills in English, fluency in other languages an advantage;

  • Solid numeracy skills, confidence in working with large data sets, advanced Excel skills;

  • Problem solving abilities. Self-starter, who can design and deliver work under their own initiative; and

  • A science-based background i.e. relevant MSc or equivalent qualification in Sustainability, Carbon, Energy or similar, and a strong undergraduate degree in a STEM based subject.

Ideally, you will have previous experience with a consultancy firm, although applications from candidates with industry/corporate backgrounds are also welcome.
