AECOM Principal Electrical Engineer in Glasgow, United Kingdom

United Kingdom - Glasgow, Glasgow

Job Summary

The Glasgow office is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join our water team, part of a well established multi-disciplinary project delivery hub, delivering projects within Scotland, across the UK and worldwide.

As a Senior Electrical Engineer, within the Glasgow office MEICA Water team, you will support the design activities and Team Lead for Electrical, Instrumentation, Control & Automation elements on projects at varying design stages from concept, outline to detailed design. This role will include an element of support and mentoring for junior engineers, checking of calculations, drawings and other deliverables and coordination of team activities.

You will be responsible for the design of electrical systems associated with Water infrastructure projects such as MCCs, LV distribution, instrument selection and control system development. This will involve the production of design drawings, along with specifications of technical requirements and contractor workscopes.

The project types we are involved in vary in scale and complexity from booster pump to large demand water-resilience or storm discharge stations supporting larger schemes. There are opportunities to be involved in more complex processes such as treatment works designs or integrated water management systems with more extensive projects being seen in the market.

This role will require liaising and interfacing with stakeholders including Lead Design Engineers, clients (technical authority & project sponsors), suppliers/contractors and third parties as necessary on projects. The closer design development would involve working with the MEICA engineers to develop and deliver the design scopes.

We are currently engaged on long standing framework agreements with many major water utilities companies working on both clean water and waste water infrastructure. With AECOM’s reputational standing and global reach, we have been involved in supporting projects around the world, particularly in the Middle East. Our projects offer the opportunity to work in a fast-paced, challenging environment, on very large infrastructure - not typically experienced in the UK.

Role Responsibilities include:

  • Providing formal Quality Assurance on deliverables of originators.

  • Undertaking calculations/analysis in support of design decisions for:

  • cable and instrument selection,

  • sizing of major components (transformers, motor starters),

  • distribution system architecture,

  • earthing arrangements,

  • power quality (power factor corrections, harmonic compensation),

  • control philosophy definition,

  • SCADA/DCS architecture.

Minimum Requirements

  • Clean water and/or wastewater project experience across feasibility, outline, detailed design.

  • Experience of MCC, PLC/SCADA and instrumentation specification and design.

  • Interpreting clients briefs in addition to working with their specifications.

  • 3D Model use to support electrical designs.

  • Delivery & implementation of EICA systems.

  • Working knowledge of BS7671.

  • Design of HV/MV distribution systems, e.g. above MCC level.

  • Supported QA activities previously on EICA design deliverables.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A degree or equivalent in electrical engineering.

  • Member of Professional Institute (for example IET) and professionally registered.

  • Experience working with, or knowledge of, Scottish Water.
