AECOM is currently seeking to recruit a two Bridge Engineers to join the busy and expanding Bridges team in our Glasgow Citypoint office.
The Citypoint office is one of our two large offices in Glasgow both of which are within a 10 minute walk of the city centre and the main Central and Queen Street train stations. Citypoint is a modern office comprising a vibrant mix of disciplines including Major Highway Design, Bridge Design and Assessment, Railway Engineering, Geotechnical Design and Environmental Remediation. These are complemented by Water, Ports and Power, Transport Planning, Building Structures and Project Management/ QS services in the Bothwell Street office.
The Bridges team provides design, assessment, inspection, repair / remediation, construction support and management services on a wide range of highway and rail infrastructure projects. The Bridges Scotland and Ireland District combines with three other districts to give an overall UK and Ireland capacity of almost 500 bridges staff. There are 60 Bridges staff in the Scotland and Ireland District. The Glasgow team, with 40, forms the major part of this district capacity, which includes smaller teams in Edinburgh, Belfast and Dublin working closely together. The District Managers work collaboratively to ensure that a seamless service is maintained across the whole region.Our current portfolio of works comprises a diverse mix of local, national and international bridges and structures projects in both the highway and rail sectors and includes numerous long-term framework commissions.
A selection of current and recent project work undertaken in Glasgow includes:
Forth Replacement Crossing, Scotland – AECOM was the Design Checker on this prestigious £1 billion project employed by the international Joint Venture contractors. Checking of the South Approach Viaduct of the iconic Main Crossing and of all of the land-based highway structures was managed and undertaken by the Glasgow Bridges team.
M7 Naas, Ireland – AECOM is current the Designer for the SIAC/Colas Joint Venture contractor on this £100m project which involves the construction of two 100m long bridges over the River Liffey as well as several other principal highway structures. The Bridges team in Glasgow is undertaking the bulk of this work in support of our colleagues in Dublin.
Civils Assessment Framework Agreement (CAFA) – AECOM is currently employed by Network Rail across five of its rail routes on this framework contract. The Glasgow team works together with the Newcastle and Edinburgh teams to complete the CAFA work in Scotland and also supports other offices in work within their areas. The work involves the inspection and assessment of overbridges, footbridges and underbridges in a multitude of structural materials and forms.
York Street Interchange and Dargan Viaduct, Belfast – AECOM were appointed in 2008 by Northern Ireland’s national highway authority to develop this vital grade-separated motorway junction scheme in Belfast through the DMRB stage assessment process. The preferred scheme, now close to construction stage, involves the construction of deep underpasses in challenging ground conditions as well as several bridges and numerous retaining walls. It also includes complex strengthening of the existing piled foundations of the Dargan Rail Viaduct to future proof the structure for potential widening to cater for two tracks in 15 years’ time.

Prepare detailed design documents including F001, F002 & F003 for Network Rail schemes
Prepare detailed design calculations to Eurocode and British Standards for repairs and new build schemes
Prepare assessment reports and calculations to BD21/01 and NR/GN/CIV/025 standards for bridge assessments
Participate and lead inspection / examination works for assessments and repair scoping surveys
Prepare Work Package Plans / SH&E plans in preparation for site works
Support Project Managers in the delivery and commercial control of projects including: client reporting, programming, resource planning and commercial monitoring
Undertake calculation checking for works within areas of experience
Support more junior Graduates and Undergraduates in the preparation of documents
Proven ability to deliver engineering tasks to expected quality, time and budget
Experience in the delivery of rail sector projects for bridges and property end clients
Experience in the preparation of report authoring including: inspection reports and assessment reports
Working knowledge of H&S procedures including significant site experience in rail sector
Intermediate ability in various software packages ideally including LUSAS and MIDAS with experience in Finite Element Analysis preferred
Working knowledge of bridge assessment standards BD21/01, BD44/15, BD56/10, BS500-3, BS5400-4 & NR/GN/CIV/025
Working knowledge of bridge repair & refurbishment would be an advantage
Working knowledge and experience of the following: Eurocode, British, Highways England and Network Rail Standards
Ideally certified to PTS and CSCS, other competencies including: COSS, PASMA, IPAF etc would be an advantage.
Degree educated or equivalent in a relevant subject such as Bridge, Civil or Structural Engineering.
Ideally educated to MSc level or equivalent
Working towards IEng or CEng MICE status with a natural drive to achieve
