Job Description

Due to the continued growth and expansion of our Energy Transmission Team in our Edinburgh, Glasgow and Bristol offices, we are looking to increase our technical workforce and are seeking to recruit a Graduate Energy Transitions Engineer for a June 2025 onwards start.

Committed to addressing the complete spectrum of energy challenges, we offer expertise in renewable energy (on and offshore wind, solar PV, hydro-power - Hydroelectric – run of river and pumped storage, hydrogen production and storage, Battery energy storage systems (BESS)), bio-energy (including energy from waste), energy efficiency and decarbonisation (capture, storage, industrial decarbonisation, low carbon fuels), thermal power generation and transmission and distribution.

Globally, our projects range from energy efficiency work that saves megawatts of power at California State University campuses and transmission line upgrades in Australia, to wind farm design in Argyll, Scotland and design & construction of a hydroelectric power project in central Laos that supplies power to Thailand.

Typical project examples include:

Green Fertilizer Production

AECOM has supported the Client to develop and procure the Front End Engineering Design of a world leading green fertilizer project using electrolytic hydrogen powered by and existing hydroelectric scheme. AECOM developed a concept design for the facility and undertook pre-qualification of the Front End Engineering Design contractors ad technology providers, supported vendor selection and provided Owners Engineer oversight of the contractor deliverables to support the project through to its Final Investment Decision.

Low Carbon Fuelling Hubs

AECOM is actively supporting a joint venture to develop the UK’s signature hydrogen hub in Aberdeen. AECOM supported the Client to join the Joint Venture and develop optioneering concepts tying in renewable generation to produce electrolytic hydrogen for mobility off takers for the municipal vehicle fleet. We are currently supporting the Client through project development and delivery.

Low Carbon Gas Power Generation –

AECOM successfully supported the Client to gain Development Consent Order for a 910MW gas fired power station to be equipped with first of a kind in the UK carbon capture equipment to connect to the East Coast Cluster to transport captured carbon dioxide for offshore injection. AECOM provided EIA, consenting, environmental surveys and engineering support from the early stages of feasibility through to Pre-Front End Engineering Design.

Projects include all stages of design from feasibility to detailed design and site construction supervision both in the UK and internationally. Our clients are a mix between large energy utility generators to private developers.

Here is what you'll do:

  • Support the delivery of consultancy services on renewable and energy transition engineering projects

  • Provide input into feasibility level studies for renewable energy and energy transition projects in conjunction with the wider AECOM teams

  • Collate and process project data from a wide variety of sources

  • Prepare drawings, calculations and reports

  • Present detailed design information

  • Assist in securing work with renewable energy and energy transition developers and their supply chain

  • Work within multidisciplinary teams with subject matter experts

Qualifications

Ready to push the limits of what is possible?

Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • Masters/Post graduate qualifications in a relevant discipline – e.g. Chemical, Mechanical or Process Engineering

  • Able to demonstrate a commitment to continued education and improvement through participating in our approved training schemes.

  • Demonstrable interest in a career in renewable energy, energy transition and decarbonisation

  • Good Microsoft Office skills essential such as Word, Excel & PowerPoint

  • Ability to communicate effectively to internal and external clients, both verbally & in writing with the confidence to engage with a variety of people (clients, colleagues, stakeholders and sub-contractors alike) and the aptitude to rationally explain, explore and discuss technical issues and capture feedback.

  • Enthusiastic, hard-working, with ambition and drive

  • Ability to structure & prioritise work effectively through close cooperation with the team as a whole.

  • Ability to work in a team and independently without losing initiative & focus.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Some familiarity with simulation software, CAD (Computer Aided Design) and ArcGIS would be beneficial.

  • Work experience in the renewable energy, energy transition or related field (e.g., working for either a power developer, equipment manufacturer, or consultant)

  • Driving licence – some travel to site may be required

  • Student member of an appropriate professional institution
