Job Description

AECOM is seeking a Transportation Planning Intern to join the transportation team in the Dallas, Texas office.

Internships are designed to introduce and build essential, hands-on skills that differ from those attained in the academic arena and help to enhance the transition from student to professional. While this position will primarily work with the Transit-Rail team, interns are assigned duties that will provide broad, well-rounded learning. This position could provide the opportunity for the intern to work on components of multi-modal transit planning, such as light rail, commuter rail, high-speed rail, bus rapid transit, and microtransit, among other transit-supportive studies.

This position is expected to begin in May 2025

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Supports planning studies and reports for new and updated plans and programs.

  • Collects a variety of statistical data and prepares reports and maps on topics, such as census information, land use, roadway network, crash records, and asset inventories.

  • Works with the planning team to conduct equitable public outreach, preparing materials and presentations.

  • Analyzes data and prepares detailed maps for use on thematic maps and in reports.

  • Conducts concept-level evaluation of transit/transportation improvement options.

  • Documents and presents findings on transit/transportation planning projects.

  • Researches current transportation-related topics at local, State, and Federal levels.

  • Assists with other duties assigned by senior staff and/or Project Managers.

  • This position will involve planning and project development activities for transportation projects under the supervision of more senior staff.

Qualifications

  • Team-oriented and able to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.

  • Understanding of local/regional transportation planning processes and policies in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to proficiently communicate both internally and externally to build collaborative relationships.Knowledge of the principles and practices of planning, research, and data collection.

  • Analytical skills to interpret research data for reports and apply statistical techniques in practical situations.

  • Presentation skills to synthesize data and research into compelling reports and graphics.

  • Knowledge of using GIS for spatial analysis.

  • Knowledge in developing and presenting illustrative reports and graphics utilizing Adobe CS or other graphics software packages.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Candidates must be pursuing a bachelor’s degree or higher in Civil Engineering, Architecture, or Planning, Political Science, GIS, Data Analytics, Urban Studies with some coursework or work experience in transportation and must have completed at least three years of study.

  • Candidates who have recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree and plan to continue with the master’s degree are eligible to apply. Recent graduates must have been enrolled in their bachelor’s degree in the most previous school term with an interest in pursuing an advanced degree in the same or similar discipline at the conclusion of the internship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a master’s degree in urban planning, Transportation Planning, or City and Regional Planning with an undergraduate degree in Planning, Political Science, GIS, Data Analytics, Urban Studies, Engineering, Architecture, or Sociology.

Offered compensation will be based on location and individual qualifications. The expected range is $21.54/hour - $29.69/hour.
