Director, Structures – South East

This is a unique opportunity for a highly experienced Structural Engineer with exceptional technical ability, and a proven extensive record of experience, in the design, implementation and execution of Structural Engineering projects.

The post will be based in London Aldgate, where we have the principle AECOM London campus, delivering work at a local, national, and global level.

This is an exciting time for AECOM. We are experiencing significant growth with an interesting and expanding pipeline of projects across London, Europe and on a wider International level. We are a significant presence in the London Design and Construction industry.

As a Director, you will have the opportunity to contribute in leading and shaping the structural engineering team. You will also be a key member of the Buildings + Places leadership team driving the Technical Excellence within the business across the UK&I region. A significant part of your role will be client facing, identifying new leads and securing new and repeat business. You will therefore need to be adept at engaging with clients and other professionals at the inception stage of projects and using your engineering expertise to make a significant contribution to emerging design concepts. We would expect you to hold existing significant client knowledge and have established relationships that you are able to exploit to secure opportunities. Your role will involve coordination and integration with the wider AECOM business lines, to maximise opportunities to grow the Buildings + Places business in the region.

This role will require project involvement at all Stages, from inception stage through to construction and implementation. It will require rigorous review of designs and methodologies to guarantee industry leading best practice. You will utilise your wealth of expertise across all materials and construction technologies to make a significant contribution to emerging design concepts and ensure design teams and ultimately the Structural Engineering Operating Units are adhering to AECOM technical quality requirements, along with all relevant codes and standards.

Minimum Requirements

  • Excellent knowledge of all standard and emerging non-standard engineering practices, techniques, and procedures

  • An extensive record of current and previous experience of leading and managing structural engineering design projects, perhaps in difficult circumstances, and where significant challenges existed.

  • Wide ranging experience in Building Structures across a number of market sectors, in particular a proven ability to establish structural design concepts and deliverable design schemes

  • Coaching and mentoring skills and the ability to act as a technical lead for a practice line of Structural Engineers, and the operating groups within which they operate.

  • Unrivalled and demonstrable technical knowledge.

  • A high level of understanding of project management principles and commercial practices.

  • Proven leadership skills.

  • Sound knowledge of construction contracts and professional agreements.

  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to write compelling proposals and deliver engaging presentations to existing and prospective clients

  • Proven skills at auditing and implementation of quality plans.

Preferred Qualifications

Desirable attributes

  • An established network of contacts – from clients to professional practices, professional institutions, industry specific societies, and contractors in the UK&I.

  • A good appreciation of the construction property market in London and the drivers for growth in the Region

  • Experience in multi-disciplinary consultancy services and in leading and managing multi-disciplinary project teams comprising internal teams and sub-consultants

  • Experience of leading and managing complex design projects ranging from £10m to £300m in construction value

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree qualified (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng), Member of either the Institution of Civil Engineers and/or the Institution of Structural Engineers.

  • Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and/or the Institution of Structural Engineers.
