AECOM Bridge Engineer in Croydon, United Kingdom

Job Summary

We have a vacancy for a Civil or Structural Engineer with experience in the inspection and assessment of Rail Bridges working for our Croydon Office. Our office is in the heart of Croydon has good transport links and accommodates a multi-disciplinary transport design centre. We are now looking to enhance and grow the team with individuals with a sound technical background and share our enthusiasm and determination to support our expanding workload.

The Bridges/Structures team is involved in Civils Assessment Framework Agreement (CAFA).

AECOM has been appointed across five rail routes for the framework contract. Our Croydon team supports the Anglia, Kent, Sussex and Wessex routes in undertaking Level 1 & Level 2 assessments of overbridges, footbridges and underbridges to a multitude of structural materials including steel, wrought-iron, cast-iron, pre-stressed concrete, masonry arches with structures ageing from 200 years old to modern construction forms. Our works involve: undertaking Inspection for Assessment to determine condition, loading and obtain dimensionality of structures; structural analysis including grillages (Level 1) and Finite Element Analysis (Level 2) and reporting including sensitivity analysis and recommendations for further works.

Typical work could include:

  • Preparatory work in advance of bridge inspection including health and safety considerations

  • Inspecting bridges during rail possessions, taking notes and photographs

  • Producing inspection reports

  • Undertake calculations and modelling of the bridges using information from historic drawings and notes from inspections

  • Producing calculation reports

It is anticipated that you would wish to progress to Chartered Membership of a recognised Professional Institution and AECOM offers a training scheme to support the candidate with this.

Minimum Requirements

  • You will have a good degree in Civil or Structural Engineering and will be a Chartered Engineer or will be working toward Chartered status

  • Have a genuine interest in transportation structures and have good technical skills and communication skills

  • Experience in inspecting highway and railway structures and identification of safety-related defects

  • Your technical background will allow you to contribute towards the maintenance of steel, reinforced concrete, and pre-stressed concrete transportation structures

  • A commitment to comply with Health and Safety at Work and meeting the needs of our Clients

  • Familiar with the Highways Agency’s Guidance - Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB)

  • Familiar with inspection practices and Bridge Condition Indicator forms (including the Inspection Manual for Highway Structures) and be able to compile electronic inspection reports

  • A good understanding of the basic mechanisms of structural deterioration and structure components

  • You will have a sound understanding of the mechanism of structural failure and deterioration, and be able to judge when urgent measures or interim controls are necessary

Preferred Qualifications

  • You will have a good degree in Civil or Structural Engineering and will be a Chartered Engineer or will be working toward Chartered status

  • Experience of inspecting rail structures would be advantageous but is not essential as training would be given in this area if necessary
