AECOM Principal Engineer (Highways) in Chesterfield, United Kingdom

Job Summary

Our UK&I highways teams has a vacancy for a talented Principal Highways Engineers to join our Midlands design teams based in Chesterfield.

The AECOM highways team is highly successful and our workload is growing providing opportunities to be involved in a number of major highways schemes. We are currently delivering major highways projects for high profile clients across the UK. To help us to achieve our ambition we are expanding our team and are seeking individuals who have a sound technical background and share our enthusiasm and determination to deliver successful projects.

The successful candidate will be Chartered Engineer with proven design and project management experience. You will have experience of working collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team developing a range of major highway projects from initial concept through to detailed design.

The role will suit a self-motivated individual who is aspiring to take a lead role in project delivery and manage dynamic teams delivering high-quality projects.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Produce technical design information including, drawings and specifications

  • Demonstrate a broad technical understanding across a range of highways disciplines including drainage, geotechnics, pavements and structures, and the ability to seek specialist advice when required

  • Provide technical input and leadership in the field of highway engineering

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant technical standards

  • Identify and manage project risks

  • Deliver specified project outcomes on time, within budget and to the quality required

  • Manage the workload, technical management and oversight of a design team

  • Write and oversee the preparation of contract documents and technical reports

  • Coach and mentor junior staff

  • Assess staff requirements at each stage of the project

  • Prepare resource plans, delivery programs, and fee proposals

  • Undertake Health and Safety duties including ensuring a safe and healthy working environment for the design team and fulfilling responsibilities for safety in design

  • Build and maintain excellent client relationships

  • Undertake business development activities and secure opportunities with new and existing clients.

Minimum Requirements

We are seeking experienced individuals with the following attributes:

  • Chartered status and membership of a relevant professional institution (MICE)

  • Significant experience of highway technical design on major projects including a good understanding of design principles and the ability to practically apply them, knowledge of standard engineering practices and a demonstrable understanding of Health and Safety including CDM

  • Good communication skills including the preparation of technical reports

  • Experience of managing design teams

  • Ability to work collaboratively with a range of project stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications

  • BSc, BEng, or higher degree in Civil Engineering

  • Site experience during construction

  • Understanding/experience of 3d design modelling

  • Experience of working within common data environments
