AECOM Principal Engineer in Chelmsford, United Kingdom

Job Summary

We are currently recruiting for a Principal Bridge Engineer to join our Chelmsford Bridges and Structures team, which has an established track record of successfully delivering a wide range of transport structures schemes.

Our modern office immediately adjacent to the railway station in the heart of Chelmsford has good transport links being only 35 minutes from London. In addition to a large bridges and structures team of circa 30 staff, it also accommodates busy geotechnical engineering, development and transportation planning and development engineering teams. We are now looking to enhance and grow the bridges and structures team with individuals with a sound technical background and who share our enthusiasm and determination to support our expanding workload.

The bridges and structures team workload ranges from feasibility studies to scheme designs, detailed designs, assessments, inspections, construction support and management services on a wide range of bridges and associated railway infrastructure schemes. The team is involved in local, national and international work with a variety of clients both from the public and private sector including design & build partnerships with contractors.

A list of some of the current projects which the Chelmsford Office is working on includes:

  • LoHAC North-West. - London Highways Alliance Contract is a long-term commission under which AECOM together with FM Conway is responsible for maintaining all Transport for London (TfL) highway structures in the North-West area of London.

  • CAFA rail bridge inspection and assessment. Long-term commission with bridge sites located on the Anglia, LNE and LNW routes.

  • HS2 Phase 2b

  • London Local Boroughs – working for many Boroughs including LB Bromley, LB Southwark, LB Ealing, LB Kingston. We are responsible for the inspection and maintenance of highway structures.

  • Wessex Capacity Programme

  • Suffolk Highways Contract – Provider of professional services to Kier including bridge inspections and assessments, bridge strengthening and bridge renewals.

As a Principal Bridge Engineer, you will have the following daily responsibilities:

  • Take a leading role in the implementation of health & safety and wellbeing best practice into the delivery of all works.

  • Act as a technical lead for the delivery of highway or railway end market projects.

  • Lead, line manage and develop a delivery focused team of Engineers and Technicians.

  • Secure and deliver works to new and existing clients.

  • Project management of schemes including: client reporting, programming, resource planning and commercial management. https://www.aecom.com/markets/transportation/bridges-tunnels/

Minimum Requirements

  • Extensive experience with bridge inspection, assessment and design schemes.

  • Proven project management experience delivering to quality, time and budget.

  • Extensive experience in road and/or rail projects in the UK.

  • Previous exposure with clients including: national and local authorities and/or Network Rail and ideally Principal Contractors.

  • Proven ability to manage staff and project Health and Safety responsibilities including compliance with CDM legislation.

  • Strong ability in various software packages ideally including LUSAS and MIDAS.

  • Strong knowledge and experience of the following: Eurocode, British, Highways England and Network Rail Standards.

  • Strong experience in delivering bridge design through Highways England and Network Rail standards.
