Job Summary

We are currently recruiting for a Bridge Engineer to join our busy and expanding Bridges team in our centrally located Bristol office.

Our Bristol office has an established track record of successfully delivering major transport schemes. Our modern office in the heart of Bristol is within easy reach of Temple Meads, Harbourside and Cabot Circus and comprises a vibrant and diverse mix of sectors and disciplines including Buildings & Places, Environment, Programme Cost Consulting and a large Transportation team including both Rail and Bridges disciplines. The team provides design, assessment, inspection, repair/remediation, construction support and management services on a wide range of transport infrastructure projects.

Our Bristol bridges office forms part of a Midlands, West & Wales region consisting of bridges teams in Birmingham, Bedford, Chesterfield, Bristol & Cardiff with a combined 130 strong presence of bridge engineers and technicians working seamlessly to deliver a wide range of challenging projects.

Our current portfolio of works comprises a diverse mix of local, national and international bridges and structures projects in both rail and road including numerous long-term frameworks.

A selection of our current and recent projects includes –

Network Rail Western Works Delivery – AECOM is routinely engaged to undertake remediation, refurbishment and bridge replacement works to Network Rail assets in the Western route. Remediation works typically include investigations, monitoring and findings reports to partially failed structural elements. Refurbishment works typically including widespread repairs to half-through metallic underbridges. Replacement works typically involve the design of new underbridge structures.

Network Rail Wales & West CP6 IP – AECOM support Principal Contractors Morgan Sindall and AMCO-Giffen for ‘Design & Build’ contracts in both the Western and Wales routes undertaking new-build detailed design and bridge refurbishment schemes through F001 to F003 delivery.

Civils Assessment Framework Agreement (CAFA) – AECOM is appointed across nine rail routes for the framework contract. Our Bristol team supports Wales and Western routes in undertaking Level 1 & Level 2 assessments of overbridges, footbridges and underbridges to a multitude of structural materials including steel, wrought-iron, cast-iron, pre-stressed concrete, masonry arches with structures ageing from 200 years old to modern construction forms. Our works involve: undertaking Inspection for Assessment to determine condition, loading and obtain dimensionality of structures; structural analysis including grillages (Level 1) and Finite Element Analysis (Level 2) and reporting including sensitivity analysis and recommendations for further works.

WECA – AECOM provides TAA support, design and asset management services to the four local authorities that make up WECA (West of England Combined Authority) including Bristol CC, South Gloucestershire CC, Bath & North-East Somerset CC and North Somerset CC. We help support the local authorities through technical advice including departures from standard and AiP approvals, and providing consulting services including assessments, remediation, strengthening and detailed design of new structures in accordance with DMRB and Eurocode standards.

SWTRA (South Wales Trunk Road Agent) – AECOM are engaged to provide engineering support services within the ‘Central’ section. Recent schemes have included reinforced concrete repairs including cathodic protection, PTSI examination, pier impact assessment to IAN91, rehabilitation of half-joints, replacement of expansion joints and bearings and improved vehicular containment to bridges.

CORMAC – AECOM is appointed as ‘strategic delivery partner’ and responsible for providing numerous transportation services including bridges to Cornwall County Council on behalf of CORMAC; schemes include bridge replacement, bridge refurbishments and structures remediation.

Role responsibilities:

  • Prepare detailed design documents including F001, F002 & F003 for Network Rail schemes

  • Prepare detailed design calculations to Eurocode and British Standards for repairs and new build schemes

  • Prepare assessment reports and calculations to BD21/01 and NR/GN/CIV/025 standards for bridge assessments

  • Participate and lead inspection/examination works for assessments and repair scoping surveys

  • Prepare Work Package Plans / SH&E plans in preparation for site works

  • Support Project Managers in the delivery and commercial control of projects including: client reporting, programming, resource planning, and commercial monitoring

  • Undertake calculation checking for works within areas of experience

  • Support more junior Graduates and Undergraduates in the preparation of documents

Minimum Requirements

  • Proven ability to deliver engineering tasks to expected quality, time and budget

  • Experience in the delivery of rail sector projects for bridges and property end clients

  • Experience in the preparation of report authoring including: inspection reports and assessment reports

  • Working knowledge of H&S procedures including significant site experience in rail sector

  • You will have a current clean driving license and be willing to travel throughout the UK to visit sites

  • Intermediate ability in various software packages ideally including LUSAS and MIDAS with experience in Finite Element Analysis preferred

  • Working knowledge of bridge assessment standards BD21/01, BD44/15, BD56/10, BS500-3, BS5400-4 & NR/GN/CIV/025

  • Working knowledge of bridge repair & refurbishment would be an advantage

  • Working knowledge and experience of the following: Eurocode, British, Highways England and Network Rail Standards


  • Ideally certified to PTS and CSCS, other competencies including: COSS, PASMA, IPAF etc would be an advantage.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree educated or equivalent in a relevant subject such as Bridge, Civil or Structural Engineering.

  • Ideally educated to MSc level or equivalent

  • Working towards IEng or CEng MICE status with a natural drive to achieve
