Job Summary

We are currently recruiting for a Technical Director - Bridge Engineering to join our centrally located Birmingham office, which has an established track record of successfully delivering major transport schemes.

Our Birmingham office has an established track record of successfully delivering major transport schemes. Our project workload ranges from feasibility studies and scheme designs to assessments, inspections, detailed design, independent checking of complex structures, construction support and management services on a wide range of bridges and transport projects including highway and railway schemes. The team is involved in local, national and international work with a variety of clients both from the public and private sector including design & build partnerships with contractors.

Our current portfolio of works comprises a diverse mix of local, national and international bridges and structures projects including Network Rail Civils Assessments Framework, London Highway Alliance Contract, Birmingham City Council Structures, A6 Manchester Airport Relief Road and Design & Build schemes in North and East England.

As a Technical Director – Bridge Engineering, you will have the following daily responsibilities:

  • Undertake and project-manage bridge engineering schemes from feasibility through to detailed design.

  • Responsible for production through to client sign off of Technical Approval documentation.

  • Analysis and detailed design of road/rail bridges and other structures.

  • Inspection, assessment and strengthening of road/rail bridges and other structures.

  • Client liaison and the production of tenders, including quality documentation and costings.

  • Project Management including program and resource monitoring, quality control, technical management and delivery.

  • Lead the local office team with accountability for project performance, utilisation, training and bidding.

  • Fulfil role of technical expert providing technical leadership in chosen field and/or fulfil role of Project Director.

  • Approve engineering design principles, philosophy and scheme design report.

  • Manage and lead the development of detailed brief and design philosophy with the client and team members.

  • Effectively undertake project and team activities in line with company policy, including commercial, managerial and technical aspects.

  • Provide leadership and management of staff and ensure effective communication of business issues to all staff reporting to you.

  • Be aware of the critical issues to ensure proper completion. Provide technical and contractual support to Project Managers.

  • Understand and implement AECOM’s Safety Health and Environment Policy.

  • Effectively mentor engineers in their progress towards Professional qualification.

Minimum Requirements

  • To be successful in this role the following will be required;

  • Proven design and project management experience delivering to quality, time and budget.

  • Significant experience of leading project teams, including major project multidisciplinary teams, developing a range of bridge and other associated structures scheme solutions from initial concept through to detailed design for implementation.

The role will suit a self-motivated individual looking to lead teams and to advance their career both technically and in project management in a dynamic structures team.

  • Experience with bridge and related structural inspection assessment and design schemes.

  • Proven design and project management experience delivering to quality, time and budget.

  • Significant experience in road and rail bridge projects.

  • High level technical skills in the design, assessment and strengthening of bridges.

  • Previous exposure with clients of both national and local authorities, together with major contractors.

  • Ability to manage staff and project Health and Safety responsibilities including compliance with CDM legislation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree educated or equivalent in a relevant subject such as Bridge, Civil or Structural Engineering.

  • Ideally educated to MSc level or above.

  • A Chartered Engineer with ICE or IstructE.
