AECOM is seeking a Senior Ecologist, to join our highly respected, dynamic and forward-thinking Central England Ecology Team (based in Birmingham, Nottingham or Chesterfield; however, office location is flexible for the right candidate). The role will involve delivery of ecological consultancy and advisory services to both internal and external clients to a high level of technical quality and to programme and budget. The ideal candidate will have experience working on major infrastructure projects, particularly road schemes, be innovative, pro-active and organised with an eye for detail.
Working as part of the existing network of AECOM ecologists, and collaborating with our wider teams, to promote best practice and innovation across the ecology business;
Leading on winning, delivery and management of ecological work, focusing on large infrastructure projects, particularly road schemes including Highways England Designated Funds;
Working independently, or with other ecologists and professionals in the planning, coordination, delivery and management of protected species and habitat surveys and desk studies, promoting use of innovative techniques, analysis and evaluation of results, impact assessments, and the design and implementation of successful mitigation strategies including European Protected Species licence applications within budgets and deadlines;
Compliance with internal business management procedures, including health and safety and technical quality of all advice and outputs;
Writing and reviewing ecological assessments, reports and other deliverables to support various project stages from pre-planning to detailed design and construction;
Determine and develop appropriate solutions, and solve problems by use of combinations of standard procedures, modifications of standard procedures or innovative methods developed on previous assignments;
Development of monitoring strategies; and
Managing and mentoring staff.
Fully qualified scientist. Utilizes scientific principles, theories, practices and existing technologies to develop technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems.
Requires general familiarity within a broad field of scientific knowledge of reciprocal effects of the work upon other disciplines/fields.
Interprets and records data, conducts analyses, compares findings to relevant studies and local, state, and federal regulations to ensure compliance.
Works under only general direction. Independently determines and develops approach to solutions.
Solves problems by use of combinations of standard procedures, modifications of standard procedures or methods developed in previous assignments.
Participates in planning required to achieve prescribed objectives.
Conducts analysis and investigation work obtained from a variety of sources.
Performs inspections and tests to ensure compliance.
Participates in developing corrective measures and procedures. Formulates hypothesis, performs research and makes recommendation.
Experience within a consultancy environment (or similar), providing ecology advice to clients within multi-disciplinary teams;
Track record of providing ecology inputs to projects, including assessment in accordance with the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) guidelines and Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB), and design and/or construction management on major infrastructure projects;
Experience of designing, co-ordinating and leading field surveys;
Training background, project application or active interest in Unmanned-Aerial-Vehicles (drones), visualisation, environmental DNA, or digital applications to support ecology work;
Have demonstrable experience in producing and reviewing a range of reports and providing ecological advice to clients/stakeholders;
Strong project management skills and demonstratable experience of technical and professional proficiency, evidenced by the input into delivery of projects to a high standard, on time and within budgets; and
Experience of working to create a positive team culture.
BSc in a relevant subject
A higher degree (MSc / PhD) would be an advantage
