AECOM Regional Cities Leader, Birmingham / Manchester in Birmingham, United Kingdom

Job Summary

AECOM, a global leader in urban environments providing a range of services with the goal of building for the communities of the future, is seeking a dynamic leader to advance business opportunities in the fast-growing markets in either Birmingham or Manchester market.

The Regional Cities Leader will be responsible for planning, managing and executing a variety of growth initiatives working closely with sector leads and teams in the AECOM Design and Consulting Services Unit. Critical components of the role include a high-visibility profile and strong political network with the city, regional and unitary level public sector as well as with the private sector development and investment community.

Reporting to a member of the United Kingdom & Ireland Leadership Team, the Regional Cities Leader's core duties will include the following:

  • Interface regularly with wider end market management in the region to include: Practice Leaders, Global Cities Director, and other Cities Leaders as appropriate

  • Develop and execute growth strategies in the Manchester or Birmingham city market on behalf of AECOM

  • Strategize business development for winning work across all market sectors/end markets in Manchester/Birmingham

Minimum Requirements

  • Significant experience, in the public and private sectors in Birmingham or Manchester, in an executive position

  • Exceptional network across the City Council, Major City Links, City Public Sector and Local Enterprise partnerships at mayoral, local authority and regional levels

  • Exceptional market awareness of the political mandate around future growth and regeneration across the City to include Infrastructure, Waste, Master Planning, Environmental targets

  • Strong private sector connections in the development, finance, construction and investment community. Ability to work in close partnership with all parts of AECOM in the region to broker meetings with private sector leadership/decision makers to position AECOM

  • Passionate about urban redevelopment, urban regeneration, urban growth together with a deep knowledge about either Birmingham or Manchester in terms of its population and culture, history economic aspirations and environmental constraints

  • Experience in financing and project delivery / organizing teaming arrangements

  • Proven track record in developing and pre-positioning for integrated projects that span design, build, finance, operations and maintenance

  • Relevant technical background in large urban, city and infrastructure programs

  • Demonstrated strong leadership skills, with analytical ability and experience with strategic planning processes

  • Strong collaborative nature/approach – ability to build partnerships based on reputation and credibility

  • Gravitas coupled with diplomacy and the ability to influence - excellent verbal and written communications skills.

Preferred Qualifications


  • It is expected that the successful candidate will be degree qualified as a minimum in a relevant discipline, although appropriate experience at a senior level is critical.

  • Master Planning, Planning, Geography technical discipline will be advantageous
