Position Title Principal Geotechnical Engineer

Our growing Ground Engineering team in Birmingham requires a Principal Geotechnical Engineer to undertake geotechnical design on a range of large infrastructure projects. The position presents an exciting opportunity to work with our Ground Engineering and Tunnelling specialists, leading and undertaking design and numerical modelling and supporting in the direction and development of junior staff.
Our Ground Engineering and Tunnelling teams belong to a major hub office of over 300 staff working on regional, national and international infrastructure projects predominantly within the Water, Highways, Rail, Property, Power and Environmental sectors.
The successful candidate will have strong technical skills, a proven track record and will be fully conversant with UK design standards. We are looking for an ambitious team player who wishes to assist in the development of innovative, cost effective and buildable solutions in an environment that is collaborative, stimulating and demanding.
Nationally our Ground Engineering team comprises around 190 staff and provides one-stop access to a variety of services ranging from project management, feasibility studies, detailed design and construction. Our clients are from the private and public sector and our key clients include Highways England, Network Rail, Homes England, BP, Shell, Thames Water, Environment Agency and numerous Local Authorities, as well as leading contractors and developers and overseas clients.

Detailed earthworks design and ground modelling for Hinkley Point C Nuclear Power Station, Earthworks and Preliminary Works Contract
Design of the central section of the Thames Tideway Tunnel
Highways England Technical Partner Role for A303 Amesbury to Berwick Down Improvements Scheme (includes tunnel at Stonehenge)
Highway schemes including Mersey Gateway Project, Smart motorway schemes on M62 and M6 and the A1 Leeming Bar to Barton upgrade to 3 lane motorway
Earthworks and Slope Remediation Schemes for Network Rail and maintenance contractors
Multi-million pound regeneration of Brent Cross, including highway, local waterway and bridge design
Foundation and tunnelling design for Stockholm Bypass
Lead Designer for Lyme Regis Environmental Improvements Phase IV
Undertake the design and reporting of a wide variety of geotechnical works including slope stability, foundations, retaining structures, tunnels, earthworks and ground improvement, and investigation and treatment of mine workings.
Day to day management of studies, design and reporting.
Inter-act with both internal and external clients as required and ensure delivery to a high level of technical quality and programme and budget.
Assist in the preparation of fee bids and proposals.
An experienced Geotechnical Engineer with proven track record in geotechnical design for complex new build infrastructure, and management of design tasks for contractors, developers and other private clients.
Leadership of design delivery and ground related risks in a design and build environment would be very advantageous.
Possess strong problem solving and inter-personal skills.
Works closely and collaboratively with colleagues, client and delivery partners.
Strong written and verbal communication skills; the ability to write clear and concise technical reports is essential.
In depth experience of routinely used geotechnical software including WALLAP and SlopeW, and of numerical modelling, ideally using Plaxis.
Good knowledge of soil and rock parameter selection, design of foundations to EC7, retaining wall design and settlement analysis.
In depth knowledge of a wide variety of UK ground conditions.
In depth knowledge and experience of relevant Eurocodes and UK standards and specifications, in particular those of Network Rail and Highways England.
Valid UK driving licence is essential. Willing to travel to other offices and sites within the UK.
A first degree in Civil Engineering or Engineering Geology.
MSc in Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology or similar.
Chartered Engineer with ICE, IOM3 or equivalent.
