Job Summary
AECOM currently has a job vacancy for an Associate Director to join our structural engineering team in Basingstoke.
This opportunity has arisen in our Building & Places business unit which focuses on projects within the Built Environment with a specific focus on Aviation, Defence and Education projects. Our work regularly uses cutting edge software and advanced analytical approaches. Our structural engineering solutions enable clients to undertake ambitious construction projects worldwide. The team undertake a wide range of unusual structural engineering projects including those which feature seismic, blast, wave, and other dynamic loads.
About us:
Our Basingstoke office is only a short walk from the railway station in the centre of Basingstoke and has excellent transport links being only 45 minutes from London and conveniently located close to the M3 for road links. The office is home to around 300 staff including 50 civil and structural staff as well as accommodating busy geotechnical engineering, maritime, coastal engineering, aviation, and bridges teams. We are looking to enhance and grow the structures team with individuals with a sound technical background and who share our enthusiasm and determination to support our expanding workload. The Basingstoke structural engineering team consists of 15 structural engineering and BIM specialists
Job Responsibilities:
The right candidate will need to demonstrate a desire to be challenged with complicated designs and advanced calculations and be willing to take on a project leadership role within the team to complete the technical delivery of projects. This opportunity would suit an individual who has significant broad experience, but who has specialisms in advanced analysis techniques possibly including Finite Element, Soil Structure Interaction, or non-linear dynamics and is looking to move into a senior management role within a team.
As an Associate Director you will have the opportunity to contribute to leading and shaping the Basingstoke structural engineering team. You will be a key member of the team and the role will have significant elements of representing the technical team in a client facing environment. You will therefore need to be adept at engaging with clients and other professions at the inception stage of projects whilst you also use your engineering expertise to make a significant contribution to emerging design concepts.
We would expect you to have experience in the delivery of projects from inception through to completion and an ability to run projects, manage resources, and effectively manage the commercial aspects of your projects. Ideally you will have existing client knowledge and some established client relationships which you will be happy develope to secure future opportunities for AECOM.
Some of the recent projects our team have completed include:
Wind Turbine Test Facility: Dynamic time history analysis and assessment of an existing reinforced concrete test facility for wind turbine blades. A finite element analysis is being undertaken to assess the ability of the existing facility to accept tests of the ever-larger blades for offshore wind turbines.
Devonport Dockyard: Supporting the long-term development of infrastructure at HMNB Devonport, the team have been involved in the conceptual design of seismically qualified upgrade works to existing dry docks
Livingstone Academy, Bournemouth: Providing civil, structural and fire engineering services for the design of an academy school in central Bournemouth. The project involves the refurbishment and conversion of existing Grade II listed court buildings as well as construction of a new 5 storey teaching block. Currently at the RIBA 4 design stage, construction is projected to start in June 2019
Minimum Requirements
Must be a Chartered Engineer with ICE or IStructE
Excellent knowledge of advanced analysis techniques such as finite element analysis or soil structure interaction
Proven ability to undertake structural design using current British Standards and Eurocodes
An understanding of project management principles and practices to support co-ordination of technical delivery of projects with internal and external clients
Experienced in the use of commercially available design software packages (e.g. Tekla building Designer, Tedds). Experience using Tekla preferred.
Experience in the use of a commercially available finite element software package (e.g. ANSYS, LUSAS, STAAD) preferred, specifically experience using ANSYS preferred.
Able to decide on the level of reliance and accuracy to attach to a variety of results obtained from design software and finite element analysis and to interpret results into practical engineering solutions
Demonstrable track record in the preparation of designs
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree or equivalent in an appropriate Civil or Structural Engineering discipline
Able to write compelling proposals and technical reports which can adequately convey complex technical concepts to clients
Prepare and deliver engaging presentations to existing and prospective clients
Sound knowledge of construction contracts, professional agreements and experience in client engagement during the preparation of fee proposals and agreeing scopes of service
Ability to explain engineering principals in a manner which can be understood by a non-specialist
