AECOM is actively seeking a creative, highly talented Emerging Transportation Planner for immediate employment for the Arlington, VA office.
AECOM is looking for a collaborative and innovative thinker to support the growth and expansion of its emerging mobility planning practice. This is a unique opportunity to help deliver innovative transportation projects for public and private sector clients around the country. Our team is on the cutting edge of this field, combining travel demand forecasting, data analytics, transportation planning, and land use planning to develop innovative methodologies to solve the planning problems of the coming decades. These issues will be multi-modal in nature, and the ideal candidate will have experience across modes as well, including public transit, parking, autos, for-hire vehicles (including TNCs), and non-motorized transportation.
Project work will include traditional travel demand modeling and/or transportation planning projects (depending on the successful candidate’s qualifications). In addition, the successful candidate will work on innovative planning projects to identify, quantify, and accommodate the changes caused by emerging technologies such as connected vehicles, automated vehicles, mobility-as-a-service, and micro transit, among others.
In this innovative and cutting-edge position, you will be expected to collaborate across disciplines with experts from a range of different areas of expertise. An ability to learn continually, a desire to try new things, and a willingness to be wrong occasionally will be essential in the successful candidate. Independent and self-motivated, yet able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team., The successful candidate will be detail-oriented, with an understanding of how those details fit into the bigger picture. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills are non-negotiable. This includes the ability to clearly and concisely write technical reports, summarize technical information for non-technical audiences, develop and deliver presentation materials for a wide range of audiences, and developing compelling and dynamic planning narratives.
You do not need to be an expert in all of these areas, but familiarity with a wide swath of transportation planning will be beneficial. The successful candidate will identify their experience with several of the following technical competencies.
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
Experience with long-range transportation planning, including developing visions, goals & objectives, and identifying and analyzing proposed needs and improvements
Data analytics, including transportation-related “big data” datasets and data analysis software tools;
Developing, calculating, and applying transportation performance metrics, including new ways to quantify mobility
Economic analysis of transportation impacts and/or benefits;
Researching transportation issues and peer practices, including both literature reviews and designing original research
Experience developing and applying travel demand forecasting models, including the use of CUBE and/or TransCAD
Experience with scenario-based planning
Software development and/or programming skills
5+ years of progressively responsible work experience
Bachelors' degree in transportation, urban planning, engineering, economics or a demonstrably related field
Strong organizational skills and strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Strong experience with at least two of the technical competencies listed in the job description above.
Software expertise: Microsoft Office Suite, ArcGIS
Knowledge of emerging transportation technologies and business models;
Ability to juggle multiple project assignments simultaneously and manage competing priorities.
Manage tasks of a technical nature on schedule and within budget,
Seven years of progressively responsible work experience
Understanding the travel demand forecasting theory/process and how individuals make transportation decisions;
Experience with visualization and graphic design, especially the ability to convert highly technical information into graphics/info-graphics including proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite.
Strong experience with three or more of the technical competencies listed in the job description above
Excellent verbal and written communications skills
